PIDS – Module 1

Course Overview

Introduction to Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS)

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS), focusing on their role as the first line of defense in a layered physical security strategy. It is designed for ELV professionals and security practitioners who need a strong foundation in perimeter security concepts, system components, detection technologies, and basic configuration principles.

Participants will learn how PIDS detect unauthorized access at property boundaries, provide early warning before threats reach critical assets, and integrate with other security systems such as CCTV, Access Control, Building Management, and Monitoring Platforms. The course covers key sensors, control panels, user interfaces, communication methods, and industry best practices.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and importance of perimeter intrusion detection in layered security
  • Explain the basic architecture of a PIDS, including control panels, sensors, keypads, and communication links
  • Identify and compare key PIDS devices, including door contacts, PIR sensors, glass break detectors, vibration sensors, beam detectors, flood, gas, smoke, and temperature sensors
  • Understand different control panel types (hardwired, wireless, hybrid, and IP-based) and their applications
  • Recognize various keypad and user interface types and their operational roles
  • Understand zone types, arming modes, partitions, and user levels used in intrusion systems
  • Identify common system faults, fault indications, and basic response actions
  • Understand integration capabilities with CCTV, access control, and building management systems
  • Apply installation best practices and understand relevant industry standards and compliance requirements
